Paraval Aḍavu

Meaning : To spread out. This adavu involves wide sweeping movements of feet

Mandala : Aramandi, Swastikam,Prerita and Sthanaka

Hasta’s   :  Katakamukha, Alapadma, Pataka, Dola, Shikara and Tripataka.

Solkattu  : Ta Tai Tai Ta I Di Tai Tai Ta II

Adavu is same as in grade 2

4 variations of the this are adavu

1) Arms opposite to feet
2) Circular movement
3) Incorporation of the jump
4) Incorporation of a ‘T’ shape floor pattern

Adavu 1

Arms opposite to feet

Ta Tai Tai Ta : Left foot moves as normal , as right tripataka moves forward

Dhi Tai Tai Ta :Repeat this on right foot with left hand

Ta Tai Tai Ta :Right foot moves as normal , as left hand in shikara

Dhi Tai Tai Ta :Repeat this on left foot with right hand

Adavu 2

Circular movement

Type A

Ta Tai Tai Ta : Parval adavu as normal
Dhi Tai Tai Ta : Turn 90 deg to the right and do the adavu on the left

Turn 90 deg again and repeat Ta Tai Tai Ta Dhi Tai Tai Ta

– Hands start in katakamukha in front of the chest
– Hands stretch into alapadma and reach up , them come around downwards in a
circular motion and back into katakamukha in front of the chest at the end
of the adavu

Type B

Ta : Small jump on the balls of the feet
Tai Tai Ta : Same as before
Complete the same in a circular movement as Type A

– Left hand in dola , right hand in katakamukha in front of the chest then moves
into a downwards semicircle, then the waist bends to complete the circle . The
body straigthens and comes back into katakamukha in front of the chest.
– Repeat that on the left side

Adavu 3 Incorporation of a Jump

Type A

Ta : Kick the right foot and rotate it in a small circle
Tai Tai Ta : Complete as usual
Repeat into center (Dhi Tai Tai Ta) and complete on the left

Ta : Start with right hand in patakha facing downwards and left hand in parallel dola
to the left shoulder . Right hand should be in front of the chest and rotated in a
small scooping motion

Tai : Right arm extends and into dola parallel to the right shoulder
Tai : Left arm comes into downwards patakha infront of the chest
Ta : –

Come to the center and repeat on the left

Type B

Ta : Small hop on the left while right foot is lifted
Tai Tai Ta : complete as usual

Repeat into center (Dhi Tai Tai Ta) and complete on left

Ta : Left hand in dola and right hand in katakamukha infront of the chest , then reach up in
alapadma.
Tai : Right hand stretchs into the side in alapadma
Tai : –
Ta : Right hand comes back into katakamukha infront of the chest.

Adavu 4 Incorporation of ‘T’ shaped floor pattern

This adavu can be performed as below

– Paraval adavu can be performed by starting to the right side back to center
– Repeat left side back to center
– Rotate 90 deg clockwise and perform the adavu and then rotate 180 deg anti-clockwise and repeat
adavu again

This can be performed using shikara , dola and katakamukha , alapadma , tripataka and patakha
