Eṭṭa Aḍavu

Meaning  : Etta means to reach out.

Mandala : Aramandi, Prenkhana, Swastika, Muzhumandi, Garuda mandala

Hasta’s : Tripataka, Shikhara, Alapadma,Pataka,katkhamukha,avahita

Solkattu: tat tai tam, dhi tai tam or tat tai tam dhit tai tam tat tai tam di di ta

1.Stretching varieties:

Start in aramandi. Both hands in shikhara in front of chest

Tat Tai : Stamp the right and then left foot for the first two beats

Tam: Extend the right leg in prenkhana for the third beat and pause for the fourth beat. Both arms move to natyarambha with left arm/hand turned down and right arm/hand turned up in pataka.

Dhit : Bring the right leg back to ayata for the fifth beat. Turn the right arm back into natyarambha

Tai:  Pause for the sixth beat

Tam : Jump on the balls of both feet on the seventh beat and pause for the eight beat. Bring hands back to starting position with shikara hasta.

From this basic combination of adavu, different variations can be continued as below:

1a. Prenkhana to right using outstretched right arm in Alapadma, left hand in front of chest in katakhamukha. Move into swastika in stankha swapping left arm to outstretch with left hand in alapdma and right hand in front of chest in katakhamukha. End with motita utplavana. Repeat on left side.

1b.Half circle turn into muzhumandi to face back, both hands in avahita in front of chest. Slide left foot ( right side adavu) into garuda mandala with body twisted to face the front. Arms in diagonal line holding Alapadma hasta. Do a bramhari and face front with both hands in avahita in front of chest. Repeat left side.

1c. Half circle turn into muzhumandi to face back, both hands in Avahita in front of chest. Complete the spin in same direction to face forward in either sthanka or ayata, hands in natyarambha.

Above could also be done in 4 semi circles, alternate facing back and front, feet in ayata or sthanka.

2. Kicking varieties

2a. Start in aramandi

Tat tai : Jump on the balls of both feet, hands are held in Tripataka ,left hand raised over the head and right hand at the side of chest.

Tam: Stamp left foot and kick right foot to side(knee level) simultaneously. Extend right arm fully at shoulder level

Dhit tai tam: Repeat above for the next two beats

Tat tai: Do a sideways jump, land a short distance away on the right in ayata or swastika. Bring right arm to starting point and stretch again quickly with an upward arch

Tam: Jump back to swastika position, right foot behind left. Return right arm again to starting position

didi tai: Three tatta adavu with alternate foot in ayata along a horizontal line to the right. Right arm stretched again at shoulder level.

Repeat on left side.

2b. Start in sthanaka, both hands in Tripataka, left hand raised over head, right hand next to side of chest

Tat tai: Jump on the flat of both feet , hands are held in Tripataka ,left hand raised over the head and right hand stretched down in tripataka. 

tam:Jump into muzhumandi ,bring the stretched arm to starting position

Dhit tai: Stamp left foot and kick right foot to side simultaneously. Extend right arm fully at shoulder level

Tam: Jump back to swastika position, right foot behind left. Return right arm again to starting position

Tat tai: Do a sideways jump, land a short distance away on the right in ayata or swastika. Bring right arm to starting point and stretch again quickly with an upward arch

Tam: Jump back to swastika position, right foot behind left. Return right arm again to starting position
